Gatineau child, 3, dies of flu

Charlotte seemed fine on Monday morning of last week when the Outaouais girl went to daycare, said Bouchard said in an interview Wednesday. That evening she seemed mildly unwell, but not in any real distress.

The following day, however, she had a fever and stayed home, Bouchard said. It got steadily worse, but still her family didn’t think there was anything dangerously wrong. They gave her Motrin, a medication with ibuprofen.

But eventually her fever went higher and Charlotte began shaking. Her mother took her to hospital in Gatineau, and later she was sent by emergency transfer to Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montreal.

She died there on Thursday."

"“No one is completely protected from getting infection.”[1]

In most cases, rest and plenty of fluids are the main treatment. Antibiotics do not work on a virus, but she said anti-viral drugs are sometimes used in people who have high risk factors such as advanced age or known health problems.

This year’s main bug, influenza A (H1N1), started off slowly but has been picking up speed. She cautioned that the pattern of flu infection can change over a season, so no one will know until the season is over whether infection rates are high or low."

"Most of the hospital’s positive tests for now show respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common respiratory illness in very young children."

In Portland, it left two young girls motherless when it killed a 37-year-old woman and her unborn child.

Stephanie Shradar had gotten the flu shot back in October, as she often did at the beginning of every flu season, said her husband, Lee Shradar. He and their daughters, ages 7 and 5, followed soon after.

So Lee didn’t think much of it when Stephanie started to feel sick Monday. Their daughter, Vera, 7, also felt a little ill.

“We just came in for the flu, mind you,” Lee said. “She was strong, she was healthy. She did everything she was supposed to do. We just came in for the flu.”

Pneumonia had overtaken Stephanie’s lungs in the last four hours.

At 8:25 a.m. Monday, a doctor told them that Stephanie had died.

Michael Czaruk, 36, had gotten his flu shot but his family says he got ill anyway

His death comes after he proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Brenda Occhipinti. Occhipinti talked with FOX5 just two years earlier about the loss of her son, Carol Jr., to the same illness.

"The same thing that happened to my son happened to him,” said Occhipinti. "He couldn't breathe. It was the same thing. The next minute you know the paramedics say there's no pulse on him."

The Clark County Coroner’s office is still investigating Czaruk’s death.

Carlo Occipinti Jr., 12, died of pneumonia stemming from an influenza B viral infection, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office.
